It works by reflectance photometry. The strip develops a colour proportional to the analyte concentration and the meter reads that optically, rather than using the electrochemical method familiar from glucose-only meters. The sample is a free-hanging drop of fresh capillary blood - a finger prick - so no venous draw or laboratory is involved.

Results are immediate, which is the entire point of near-patient testing. A cholesterol figure delivered while the person is still in front of you supports a conversation that a result posted out a week later does not. Lactate readings, measured in mmol/L, are useful in exactly the same way for training thresholds where the timing is the whole value.
