Digital probe or infrared forehead?
A probe thermometer gives a direct contact reading and is generally the more accurate of the two; an infrared forehead unit is far faster and needs no contact, which matters for screening or for a sleeping child. Many sites carry both for different jobs.
Do I need probe covers?
For anything beyond single-person home use, yes. A cover keeps the probe clean between patients and is the simplest way to avoid cross-contamination on a shared thermometer.
How long does a reading take?
Longer than an infrared scan — typically under a minute, with most units beeping when the reading stabilises. Removing it early is the most common cause of a falsely low reading.
What counts as a fever?
Generally a temperature of 38C or above, though it depends on the person, the site of measurement and the context. A thermometer informs a clinical judgement; it does not replace one.
