CPR training session showing chest compressions

CPR is something that is performed every day across the world.  It has saved countless lives and many are grateful for have had CPR done on them.  However, there are some myths about learning CPR that are simply not true. While people believe these myths, they are preventing people from wanting to learn CPR.  CPR can in fact save lives and is relatively easy to do. In fact dispatch at 000 will oftentimes walk people through to help their loved ones until help arrives.

1.   Only Professionals Need to Learn CPR

Sure, the daycare providers, teachers, nurses and alike professionals that work out in the general public need to learn or should learn CPR.  However, everyone should learn this skill. It is a lifelong skill to have. And, you don't have to keep your certification in order to perform it in an emergency situation.  Emergencies happen all the time, however, there isn't time for the ambulances to make it and the victim needs CPR in order to have a chance of surviving. This is when it's important that people step up and one another.  Should you not have CPR training the staff at the other end of the 000 phone call will help guide you and walk you through it.

2.  You need to keep up your license

People often think that they will need to keep up their license should they get trained and certified.  This is simply not true. However, some professionals require that you are certified and trained every year. This is not the rules from the CPR instructors and classes but the rules of an employer or the government.  If that is the case, then yes, you will need to be trained more often than the general population. Often times, one course is enough for you to understand the basics of CPR and how to perform it.

3.  You're Great at CPR after training

Just like driving a car, everyone gets training but not everyone is great at it.  And, well, getting better at something requires practice. This practice is something that not all of us get on a daily basis.  This is why taking more classes and keep up with CPR training is key if you want to be great at CPR. Getting in more practice and fine-tuning your skills helps you improve on everything and it's the same for CPR.

4.  Classes take a lot of Time

CPR classes do not take a lot of time.  They take about 2-3 hours of your day. This can be done in the morning before everyone else is up and they won't even miss you.  Or set them up after work on a weeknight. There are many many places that offer CPR courses and they are quick and convenient. After all, you as the student is not the only one living in this busy world.

5.  Classes Cost a Lot

CPR classes cost less than $50 to get certified.  Which, when taking into consideration that these skills may save someone you love, that's not much.  These are life-saving skills that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.
