It’s that time of year to let off steam and have some spooky fun. Whether you’re a parent of young kids or enjoy partying yourself, you’ll want to know how to make this one a safe Hallowe’en.

We’re going to look at how to celebrate safely and with responsibility for others in our tips for a safe Hallowe’en.

Keep Covid-safe

While Covid restrictions have been eased in many areas, we all still have a responsibility to practise Covid-safe behaviour.

Although you may now be permitted to gather inside, consider having your Hallowe’en party outdoors to minimise the spread of infection.

If you do celebrate inside, keep the windows open and ensure there is adequate ventilation.

You should also encourage your guests to wash their hands frequently and use sanitiser in between handwashing.

When offering lollies and treats, stick to individually wrapped items in separate serving bowls.

Encourage your children to wear a face mask to minimise the spread of infection. In fact, you can even incorporate it into their spooky costume!

Trick or treat safely

Every Hallowe’en is an opportunity to emphasise advice around 'stranger danger' to children.

If your kids are old enough to go out unaccompanied trick or treating, only allow them to visit the houses of people you know. And remind them of some basic rules to keep safe, which apply at any time of year:

  • Don’t accept gifts – edible or otherwise – from a stranger.
  • Don’t get in a car with a stranger.
  • Don’t go off anywhere with a stranger.
  • Always let your parents or trusted adult know where you’re going and with whom and agree on a time when you should be back.

If your child has their own mobile phone, then keeping in touch with them becomes a whole lot easier. You can also use a tracking app to know exactly where they are at any time.

Hallowe’en safety for adults

Hallowe’en is a fun time for adults too. Know how to keep safe if you’re partying the night away with our tips for a safe Hallowe’en.

Know your alcohol limits

While a lot of different factors like your age, weight and gender influence how much alcohol you can safely drink, Australian guidelines say that adults should have no more than 10 standard alcoholic drinks a week. They also say that you should take a maximum of four standard drinks on a single day.

A standard drink equals 10 g of pure alcohol. This means that:

  • A 285 ml serving of full-strength beer is equivalent to 1.1 standard drinks.
  • A 100 ml serving of red wine is 1 standard drink.
  • A 100 ml serving of white wine is 0.9 standard drink.
  • A 30 ml serving of a high strength spirit is 1 standard drink

Other alcohol-related safety tips:

  • Alternate alcohol with soft drinks.
  • Don’t accept drinks from strangers.
  • Keep your drink close to you so that no one has the chance to add anything harmful to it.

Say no to drugs

Don’t be pressured into consuming illegal drugs. As well as being against the law, illicit drug use can lead to physical and mental health problems, dependency and overdose.

Travel safely

If you’re travelling to a party or event, consider the following:

  • Know how you’re going to get home.
  • Don’t get in a vehicle with someone you don’t know or someone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Don’t travel alone.
  • If you can’t avoid travelling or walking alone, stick to well-lit and busy areas. Don’t be tempted to take shortcuts in unfamiliar or poorly lit places.
  • Don’t listen to music while you are walking.
  • Make sure someone knows where you are and what time you’re expected home.
  • Keep your mobile phone fully charged and loaded with numbers or apps for taxi services.

Keep a first aid kit to hand

It’s always useful to have a family first aid kit at home in case of any minor injuries or illnesses at Hallowe’en when levels of excitement are running high.

A typical first aid box will contain items such as alcohol wipes and dressings to deal with cuts and grazes, bandages to support strains and sprains and lots of other useful items like tweezers, burn treatment and saline pods for washing wounds.

And remember to keep your family first aid kit box topped up with supplies so that you always have what you need to hand.
