First-time camper checklist with tent and first aid kit

There’s a first time for everything, and that includes camping.

We’ve put together our checklist for first time camping to show you how to get ready for that exciting first trip.

We’ll list actions to take and items to bring with you to ensure that your first camping trip is a success.

1. Start with the tent

Start by choosing a suitable tent. Firstly, it should be big enough for your group.

Choose a tent that’s easy to use — for example, a pop-up tent that can be set up instantly. But be aware that these are not suitable for windy weather.

Or you could try an A-frame tent. It’s safe in heavy rain and is easy to set up and take down again.

2. Try out your kit before your camping trip

Get used to your gear before your trip. Practise setting up and taking down your tent in your backyard or garden beforehand.

The same goes for other equipment like your air mattress and camp stove. Being able to set up camp as soon as you arrive will free you to enjoy the experience without stressing.

3. Take the right clothing

Be prepared by taking the right clothing. Even if you’re camping in summer, remember that weather conditions can change quickly when you are out in nature.

It’s always a good idea to dress in layers, so pack light T-shirts, sweaters and jackets. Don’t forget waterproof clothing so that you can still explore if it rains.

4. Make a food shopping list

Plan your meals according to the facilities that will be available. Some campsites have barbecues, which will extend your cooking options.

Or you may have to rely on your own camping stove or even a simple fire that you build at your destination.

In any case, plan out your meals so you can shop accordingly. The trick is to bring enough food for your needs without having lots left over.

5. Don’t stray too far from home

If it’s your first time camping away from home, choose a spot that’s not too far away.

Go with the notion that anything could happen while you are camping.

This could be a change in the weather. Or it could be that you’re feeling unwell and can’t face another night in a sleeping bag.

Being able to reach home quickly means that you are less likely to give up on the camping dream and will plan another trip for a different time.

6. Know the camping rules

Know camping rules or etiquette before you arrive. Here are some common-sense guidelines you should follow:

  • Don’t set up camp too close to others.
  • Leave your campsite how you found it. Remove any rubbish and leftover food, and dispose of human waste properly.
  • Keep noise levels down, especially after 9 p.m.
  • Don’t feed native animals.
  • Don’t chop down trees for firewood. You can buy it at most campsites or collect any pieces of wood lying on the ground.

7. Check the weather forecast

Check the weather forecast before you set out on your camping trip. Knowing what the weather will be like will allow you to plan properly and take adequate supplies.

You should also be prepared to cancel your trip if the weather is set to be severe.

Keep track of the weather on an app and check in regularly so you know what’s ahead.

8. Tell someone where you’re going

To keep safe on your first camping trip, let someone know where you’re going.

Send them your itinerary, details of where you’re staying and what time you expect to be home.

This means that if you have an accident or get lost, the alarm can be raised quickly.

9. Arrive at the campsite before dark

Getting to your campsite with only an hour or so to spare before nightfall is a rookie error.

Arrive in plenty of time to set up your tent and other equipment so you can enjoy the evening.

It’s also basic courtesy to your neighbours to be quiet and settled before night sets in.

10. Take a first aid kit

Put a first aid kit on your camping list to ensure that you can deal with any minor injuries or illnesses easily yourself.

waterproof travel-sized first aid kit is ideal for campers. Or opt for a waistbag first aid kit to keep your hands free when you are exploring.

Once you’ve enjoyed your first camping trip, you’ll be planning another. So it’s a good idea to keep your first aid kit refilled with the supplies you need.

Finally, if you or a group member has a medical condition such as allergy or diabetes, wear a medical ID bracelet to make treatment quick in the event of an emergency.
