Babies and children first aid kit on the changing table

Any parent or parent-to-be wants to do everything possible to keep their little one safe and cared for.

So as well as the day-to-day stuff like nappies, clothes and toys, you’ll want to invest in a first aid kit that prepares you to deal with minor injuries and illnesses at home.

Get organised and keep your first aid kit for your child or baby well stocked with essential items.

We take you through a first aid kit checklist for babies and children to make sure you’re covered.

Thermometer

Your first aid kit for babies checklist should have a thermometer right there at the top. It’s one of those items you can’t do without when you have kids, as childhood fever is such a common event.

When it comes to little ones, you’ll need a device that can be used easily and effectively when you don’t have the option of slipping it under their tongue.

An infrared forehead thermometer is a great choice for a quick, non-invasive temperature check and can be used on newborns and older children too. Simply point it at the forehead, press the button and get a rapid temperature reading.

Antiseptic spray

Include antiseptic spray in your first aid kit for babies and toddlers and you’ll reach for it time and time again.

If your child has a cut or abrasion, be sure to clean and dry it thoroughly, then give it a spritz of antiseptic spray to keep the risk of infection low.

It’s a really handy item to have in your first aid kit and a quick and easy way to treat a wound.

Tweezers

Tweezers are another first aid kit essential in case your child gets a splinter — something that’s bound to happen during the course of their childhood!

These tweezers with magnifying glass make it super easy to find and extract any splinters in tiny fingers or toes.

Plasters and dressings

As soon as your little one gets mobile, you’ll need a good supply of plasters for dealing with minor cuts and scrapes.

Know that they come in different varieties. Water-resistant plasters are perfect for active little ones, and you can also find fabric plasters for a comfy fit. If your child has sensitive skin, hypoallergenic plasters are the perfect choice.

You may also like to invest in surgical tape and cushioned dressing that you can cut to size for larger areas that need covering up.

Bandages

Bandages are a must for your child-friendly first aid kit. Not only will they hold wound dressings in place, but they can also provide support to sprained or sore limbs.

You may also find that your child loves borrowing bandages from your first aid kit to role play 'doctors and nurses' with their toys!

Hot/cold pack

An instant hot/cold pack that can be microwaved or applied straight from the freezer is a versatile addition to your kit.

Use packs for burns, bites, sprains and all types of aches and pains. Preparing and applying the pack will distract your child from their tears, as well as soothing them.

Saline solution

Make sure saline solution is included in your first aid kit contents. It’s a versatile item, as it can be used for cleaning wounds or as an eyewash if your child gets a foreign body in their eye. Simply break open the sterile package and rinse the affected area with the contents. Nothing could be easier!

Itch relief

If you enjoy spending time outdoors as a family, then sachets of itch relief are essential items to have in your first aid kit. This soothing gel will give your child relief from bites, stings and minor irritations and rashes from plants and the environment.

The hand single-use sachets are convenient to keep in your first aid kit at home or in the car for those essential family days out.

First aid guide

Invest in an easy-to-read first aid guide and keep it in your first aid kit for easy reference. That way, it will be to hand whenever you need it and you can follow the step-by-step instructions with ease.

We love this easy first aid guide that’s slim enough to fit in your kit yet covers a whole range of scenarios with clear and easy instructions, even if you have little first aid knowledge.

You can also brush up on your first aid basics on the St John Ambulance website.
