A gallipot is a small, open-topped pot used in clinical work to hold a solution or swabs within easy reach during a procedure. This plastic gallipot holds 150ml - enough saline or antiseptic for a typical wound clean or dressing change - and sits steadily on a dressing trolley, bench or tray. The name comes from the small glazed pots once used by apothecaries; today plastic gallipots are the everyday standard in clinics, wards, aged care and first aid rooms because they are light, unbreakable and inexpensive.

Why use a plastic gallipot?

Pouring saline straight from a bottle onto a wound wastes solution and contaminates the bottle neck. Decanting a measured amount into a plastic gallipot lets you dip gauze as needed, keeps the stock bottle clean, and puts the solution exactly where your hand expects it during a procedure. Plastic is lighter and safer than glass or metal around patients, and a 150ml pot is the practical size for most wound care tasks.

Using a gallipot hygienically

Pour only the amount of solution you expect to use, and never pour unused solution back into the stock bottle. Use a fresh, clean gallipot for each patient and each procedure, and do not leave solution standing in an open pot for later - an open pot of solution left on a bench is easily contaminated by dust, splashes or a passing hand, and it is impossible to tell afterwards whether it is still clean. Follow your workplace infection control policy for whether pots are single use or cleaned and reprocessed between uses. Keep sterile and non-sterile items separate on the trolley, and place the gallipot where you will not reach across the clean field to use it.

Stocking a dressing trolley

A well-set trolley saves time and reduces contamination. Alongside a plastic gallipot, most dressing trolleys carry sterile gauze, saline or an antiseptic solution, non-adherent dressing pads, tape, gloves, scissors and a waste bag. Keep enough gallipots that a clean one is always available for the next patient, and check that solutions on the trolley are in date and properly labelled once opened. Many teams also stock a second gallipot for used swabs, so contaminated gauze never goes back near the clean solution. At the end of a procedure, discard the remaining solution, dispose of or reprocess the pot according to policy, and wipe down the trolley surface before restocking it for the next patient. A few spare plastic gallipots in the first aid room mean a clean one is always within reach.

Common uses

Wound cleaning and dressing changes, holding swabs during procedures, and stocking dressing trolleys and first aid rooms. Fill it with saline for irrigation or chlorhexidine irrigation solution, and dip sterile gauze squares as you work.
