How to use an instant ice pack safely
Squeeze the inner pouch to activate, shake to mix, then wrap the pack in a cloth or towel before it touches skin - never apply a cold pack directly, because an ice burn on already damaged tissue is a real risk. Apply for around 15 to 20 minutes, then leave it off for at least as long before repeating. Stop earlier if the skin becomes numb, white or mottled. If the pack splits, discard it and wash any contents off the skin. Use extra care on children, on people with reduced sensation or circulation, and on anyone who cannot tell you the pack is hurting.
Common uses
Sprains, strains, bruising and minor knocks; sideline and sports first aid; workplace and vehicle kits; and school and childcare sick bays. If you would rather refreeze than replace, Techni Ice is the reusable alternative. Stock them with hot and cold packs, or as part of a wider first aid supplies order at MediBC.
Instant Ice Pack FAQs
How does an instant ice pack work?
Squeezing the pack breaks an inner pouch, mixing two components in a reaction that draws in heat. The pack turns cold within seconds without ever needing a freezer.
How long does it stay cold?
Typically around 15 to 20 minutes, which matches the recommended application time for cold therapy. It cannot be recharged once used.
Can it be applied directly to skin?
No. Always wrap it in a cloth or towel first. Direct contact risks an ice burn, particularly over injured skin or on children.
Is it reusable?
No, these are single use. Once activated the reaction cannot be reversed, so discard the pack after use and restock the kit.
Do they expire?
They have a long shelf life stored unactivated at room temperature, but check the date on the pack and replace any that are past it or that feel like the contents have leaked or hardened.
