What Numit 5% Cream is used for
Numit numbs intact skin before IV catheter insertion, blood sampling and vaccination, and before superficial procedures. It is the reason a child can have a cannula placed without the distress, and the reason an adult with needle anxiety can get through a blood test.
How long Numit takes to work
Numit is applied as a thick layer under an occlusive dressing and needs time to work. Anaesthesia of the skin is achieved after around 60 minutes under occlusion, and lasts roughly two hours once the dressing comes off. That timing is the single most common thing people get wrong: applied five minutes before a needle, it does nothing at all.
Plan backwards from the appointment. Apply an hour before, cover it, and leave it alone. Follow the directions and timing on your own pack, and ask your pharmacist or the clinic if you are unsure how much to use or where.
Intact skin only. Do not apply it to broken skin, wounds, eyes, or mucous membranes unless a clinician has directed it. Do not exceed the amount or the application time on the pack, particularly on children, and speak to a doctor first for infants, for anyone with a blood disorder, or for anyone taking medicines that affect haemoglobin.

How long before a needle should I put it on?
About an hour. This combination reaches skin anaesthesia after roughly 60 minutes under an occlusive dressing. Applying it shortly before a procedure will not work, which is the most common mistake with it.
Do I need to cover it?
Yes. It is applied as a thick layer under an occlusive dressing, not rubbed in. The dressing is part of how it works, not an optional extra.
How long does the numbness last?
Around two hours after the dressing is removed, following a one to two hour application. That is usually ample for a blood test or cannulation.
What is the difference between the 30g and 10g?
Only the amount of cream. Same lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5% formulation. The 30g is the clinic size for repeat use and works out cheaper per application; the 10g suits one or two uses.
Can I use it on broken skin?
Not unless a clinician has directed it. It is for intact skin. Absorption from broken skin is different and unpredictable, which is why that restriction exists.
Can I use it on a child?
It is widely used before childhood vaccinations and cannulation, but the amount and the maximum application time depend on age and weight. Follow the pack and ask your pharmacist or the clinic, particularly for infants.
Can I use Numit before a tattoo or piercing?
People do, but check with the studio first. Some will not work over anaesthetic cream, and it can affect the skin. Follow the pack limits on quantity and area regardless of the reason for use.
