Panadol Soluble Tablets are paracetamol 500mg tablets that dissolve in water instead of being swallowed whole. The pack of 20 is for the temporary relief of headache and tension headache, migraine, toothache, sore throat, cold and flu symptoms, muscular aches, period pain and fever.

Currently out of stock. If you need paracetamol today, the Paracetamol 500mg Tablets Box of 20 is the same active ingredient at the same strength and is in stock now.

What is in Panadol Soluble?

One active ingredient: paracetamol 500mg per tablet. That is the whole story, and it is worth saying plainly because it is the most asked question about Panadol. There is no codeine, no caffeine, no antihistamine and no decongestant in this product. Other products in the Panadol range do add those, which is exactly why you should read the box rather than assume.

Because the only active is paracetamol, it does not irritate the stomach lining the way aspirin and anti-inflammatories can, which is why it is generally the pain reliever suggested for people who cannot take those.

Why choose a soluble tablet

Two honest reasons, and one trade-off.

  • Swallowing. Dissolved in water there is no tablet to get down, which matters for anyone who struggles with tablets, has a sore throat, or is feeling too unwell to manage one.
  • It is already in solution when you drink it, so it does not have to disintegrate in the stomach first.
The trade-off is salt. Soluble and effervescent tablets use sodium compounds to make them fizz and dissolve, so they carry a sodium load that ordinary tablets do not. If you are on a low-salt diet, have high blood pressure, or have been told to watch your sodium for heart or kidney reasons, ask a pharmacist before using soluble tablets regularly. We have deliberately not printed a milligram figure here, because the ones we could verify were for overseas packs rather than the Australian product. Your pharmacist can read it off the box in front of you.

How much paracetamol is safe

According to healthdirect, adults should take no more than 1 gram every 4 to 6 hours, up to a total of 4 grams in 24 hours. At 500mg per tablet that is two tablets per dose and eight tablets in a day, as an absolute ceiling rather than a target.

For children aged 1 month to 12 years the dose is 15mg per kilogram of body weight, given every 4 to 6 hours, with no more than 4 doses in 24 hours. Paracetamol should not be given to babies under one month old. Children's doses are weight-based rather than age-based, so a dosing device and the child's actual weight matter more than a guess.

The mistake that causes real harm: doubling up without knowing. healthdirect is explicit that you should not take paracetamol if you are also taking other medicines that contain paracetamol. Cold and flu preparations, some period pain products, and many combination painkillers contain it without "paracetamol" being the name on the front of the box. Reaching for a cold and flu sachet and two Panadol at the same time is the ordinary way people exceed the daily maximum without ever intending to.

Why paracetamol overdose is different

This is the part worth knowing before you ever need it. In overdose, paracetamol can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, liver damage, seizures, coma and death - and the symptoms usually appear about 24 hours afterwards, not straight away. Feeling fine is not evidence that nothing is wrong.

If too much has been taken, call triple zero (000) immediately and ask for an ambulance, even if there are no symptoms at all, or ring the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26. Treatment works best when it is early, which is precisely why waiting to see how you feel is the wrong move.

Check with a doctor before using paracetamol if you have liver problems or kidney problems, if you drink more than the recommended amount of alcohol, or if you are very underweight, since a smaller dose is needed.

Panadol, Panamax and paracetamol: the same medicine

PanamaxParacetamol 500mgSwallowed tablet, usually a 100-pack

All three deliver the same active ingredient at the same strength. What you are choosing between is format, pack size and price, not potency. Where a branded and a generic pack both list paracetamol 500mg, they do the same job.

Panadol Soluble FAQs

What is in Panadol?

Panadol Soluble contains one active ingredient: paracetamol 500mg per tablet. No codeine, no caffeine, no decongestant and no antihistamine. Other products in the Panadol range do contain additional actives, so check the specific box rather than assuming they are all the same.

How many Panadol can I take in a day?

healthdirect gives the adult maximum as no more than 1 gram every 4 to 6 hours and a total of 4 grams daily, which is eight 500mg tablets at most in 24 hours. That is a ceiling, not a target. Count anything else you are taking that contains paracetamol toward the same total, because cold and flu products very often do.

Is Panadol the same as Panamax?

Both are paracetamol 500mg. Panadol is the brand most people recognise, Panamax is another brand of the same active at the same strength, and generic paracetamol is the same again. The differences are format, pack size and price rather than what the medicine does.

Has Panadol Soluble been discontinued?

Not to our knowledge, but we are out of stock of this particular pack at the moment, which is a different thing and we would rather say so. If you need paracetamol now, the generic 500mg tablets are in stock. If the soluble format specifically is what you need, a pharmacy can tell you what is currently available.

Why can I not find Panadol in the United States?

Because the same medicine is sold under a different name there. Americans call the active ingredient acetaminophen rather than paracetamol, and the best-known brand is Tylenol. It is the same drug. Panadol is the familiar brand across Australia, the UK and much of the world, which is why the question comes up so often for travellers.

Can I take it on an empty stomach?

Paracetamol does not irritate the stomach lining in the way aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers can, which is one of the reasons it is often the first suggestion for people who cannot tolerate those. Follow the directions on the pack, and speak to a pharmacist if you are unsure how it fits with anything else you take.

Is soluble paracetamol faster than a tablet?

It is already dissolved when you drink it, so it does not need to break down in the stomach first. The practical benefit most people notice is simply not having to swallow a tablet when they feel unwell or have a sore throat. Weigh that against the sodium content of soluble formats if you are watching your salt intake.

What should I do if someone has taken too much?

Call triple zero (000) and ask for an ambulance, or ring the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26, and do it immediately even if the person seems completely fine. Paracetamol overdose symptoms usually do not appear until around 24 hours later, and treatment is most effective when started early. This is not a wait-and-see situation.

Always read the label and use only as directed. Incorrect use can be harmful. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional. Keep all medicines out of reach of children. For poisoning advice in Australia, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26; in an emergency call 000.
