What the purge valve on a Pelican case actually does

Move a sealed case up a mountain, into an aircraft hold or out of an air-conditioned room into summer heat, and the air inside expands or contracts. Without somewhere for that to go you get a case that will not open, or pressure working against the seal. The automatic purge valve lets air pressure equalise both ways while keeping water and dust out, which is why the lid still opens easily after a flight. It is worth being precise about the other claims too: the case is highly impact resistant rather than literally unbreakable, and it is sealed rather than airtight - the purge valve exists precisely so it is not hermetically closed. Chemical resistance varies by substance and contact time, so check the specific chemical rather than assuming.

Common uses

Transporting and storing diagnostic instruments, AED accessories, emergency response kit, cameras and electronics, and anything that has to travel in a vehicle or between sites. Pair it with resuscitation equipment, or browse the wider medical supplies range at MediBC.

Pelican Case FAQs

Is a Pelican case waterproof?

The o-ring seal is designed to keep water out when the case is properly closed, the seal is clean and undamaged, and the latches are engaged. Confirm the current manufacturer ingress rating for this exact model before relying on it for immersion or marine use.

What does the automatic purge valve do?

It equalises air pressure between inside and outside as altitude or temperature changes, while still keeping water and dust out. That stops pressure building against the seal and keeps the lid openable after a flight.

Can you carry medical equipment in a Pelican 1400?

Yes, it is widely used for instruments, AED accessories and response kit. Measure your equipment against the 30 x 22.5 x 13.2cm internal size and allow for foam around it. The case protects equipment but is not sterile packaging.

How does the pick and pluck foam work?

The foam is pre-scored into small cubes. Lay your equipment on top, mark the outline, then pull out the cubes inside it to create a fitted recess. Leave a border of foam around each item so nothing is pressing against a wall.

Is the Pelican 1400 unbreakable?

It is extremely tough, but no case is unbreakable under every impact, crush or misuse. Treat it as high impact resistance rather than a guarantee, and inspect the seal and latches periodically if it is used hard.
