Pinetarsol is a pine-tar bath solution used to relieve the itching, redness and inflammation of eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and similar skin conditions. Made in Australia by Ego Pharmaceuticals at Braeside in Victoria, it is soap-free and does not strip the skin the way ordinary bath products do. Pine tar has been used in dermatology for well over a century: it reduces itch, slows the excessive skin-cell turnover seen in psoriasis, and softens scaly patches. This 500ml bottle suits regular family use.

How to use Pinetarsol solution
It is a bath additive and a soap substitute, not a wash-off cleanser. Add roughly two capfuls to a warm - not hot - bath and soak for 10 to 15 minutes, or apply it to wet skin in the shower and rinse lightly. Hot water makes itch worse, which is the most common mistake. Pat dry rather than rubbing, and moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp to hold the water in.
Slip hazard: like all bath oils and tar solutions, Pinetarsol makes the bath and floor slippery. Take particular care with children, older people and anyone unsteady, and rinse the bath afterwards.
Choosing between the Pinetarsol formats
The range covers the same active in different vehicles, and which one you want depends on how much skin is involved. This solution is for baths and for use as a soap substitute over large areas. The Pinetarsol Gel is for localised patches you want to treat directly without a bath. How does Pinetarsol work?
Pine tar has three useful actions on inflamed skin: it calms itch, it slows the accelerated skin-cell turnover that produces psoriatic scale, and it helps soften and lift that scale so moisturisers can work. It is a symptomatic treatment rather than a cure, and it is generally used as part of a routine alongside a moisturiser and whatever your doctor has prescribed.
Can I use Pinetarsol on my dog?
Ask your vet first, and do not simply substitute a human product. Pine tar preparations are used in some veterinary shampoos, but concentration, contact time and formulation differ, cats in particular are sensitive to tar and phenolic compounds, and dogs lick treated skin. Your vet can prescribe something formulated and dosed for the animal, which is safer than guessing with a human bath solution.
Can Pinetarsol be used on the face?
Keep it away from the eyes, and be cautious on facial skin, which is thinner and more reactive than skin on the body. For facial eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis, ask a pharmacist or GP what is appropriate rather than extending a bath product to the face on your own. Never apply it to broken skin or open, weeping areas.
Is Pinetarsol antifungal or antibacterial?
It is not sold as either. Pine tar is used for its anti-itch and anti-scaling effects, not as an antimicrobial, and it should not be relied on to treat a fungal or bacterial skin infection. Skin that is hot, spreading, weeping, crusted or painful may well be infected and needs medical assessment rather than a tar bath.
Is Pinetarsol safe to use regularly?
It is intended for regular use as directed on the pack, which is why the 500ml size exists. Follow the label, do not use it on broken skin, and stop if it stings or the skin becomes more irritated. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or using it on a young child, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Does Pinetarsol help eczema?
It is widely used in Australia for the itch that comes with eczema, and reducing itch matters because scratching is what breaks the skin and drives the cycle. It does not replace prescribed treatment such as a topical corticosteroid, and it is not a cure. Life saver
I have used Pinetarsol for more than 30 years. There is nothing comparable in the non prescription realm for calming psoriasis. I only wish I did not have to pay so much to have it shipped to the UK where I live. I have used this as an adjunct to medical treatment (always see a doctor), but by brother has used when on two occasions he developed brief attacks of guttate psoriasis and it cleared it. It is great in the bath, but I have also mixed with warm water to bath plaques and on my scalp.
