Reading a fingertip pulse oximeter accurately

Perfusion index shows how strong the pulse signal is at the finger. It is a quality indicator rather than a clinical measurement - a low perfusion index usually means cold hands, poor circulation or a badly seated probe, and it tells you to fix the measurement before trusting the number. Several things distort a reading: movement and shivering, cold hands, nail polish or artificial nails, bright ambient light, and low perfusion. There is also a documented limitation worth knowing - pulse oximeters can be less accurate on darker skin and may overestimate oxygen saturation, which means a reassuring number should never override concerning symptoms. Sit still, warm the hand, use a bare finger, and wait for the reading to settle. Treat the result as an estimate to be read alongside how the person actually looks and feels, not as a diagnosis on its own.
