When to use a keep out sign rather than a restriction sign

Use it when the honest answer is that nobody should be in there. An excavation, an asbestos removal area, a confined space, a structurally unsafe section, a zone under live testing - places where the hazard does not care who you are or what training you have. That is different from AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY, which restricts by permission and accepts that some people will enter, and different again from NO ENTRY, which is a traffic instruction about direction. The danger header is the strongest of the AS 1319 hazard formats and its value depends on being rare. A site where KEEP OUT appears on every second door teaches people to walk past it. Reserve it for genuine exclusion, and back it with a physical barrier - a sign on an open gap is a suggestion.

Common uses

Excavations and trenches, demolition zones, confined space entries, asbestos and hazardous material areas, structurally unsafe buildings and temporary danger zones. Pair it with Construction Site at the perimeter or Authorised Personnel Only for permission-based areas, or browse more fire and safety equipment at MediBC.

Keep Out Sign FAQs

When should a keep out sign be used?

When nobody should enter at all - excavations, confined spaces, asbestos areas, unsafe structures. If some people may legitimately enter, an authorised personnel sign is the honest choice.

Keep out or no entry?

Keep out is a hazard exclusion aimed at people on foot. No entry is a traffic instruction telling a driver this is not a way in. Different audiences, different messages.

Does the sign need a barrier as well?

Yes, wherever practical. A sign on an open gap reads as advice. Fencing, hoarding or a locked gate makes the exclusion real and the sign explains it.

Why does overusing it matter?

Because the danger format only works while it is rare. If KEEP OUT appears on every second door, people learn to ignore it, and the one that mattered gets ignored too.

Is 280 x 380mm large enough?

It suits a door, gate or barrier where the reader is within a few metres. For a site perimeter viewed from the footpath, choose a larger format.
