Vicks VapoRub is a medicated vaporising ointment used to relieve the distress of colds - nasal congestion, coughs, and minor muscular aches. It works two ways: the vapours are inhaled to ease a blocked nose, and rubbing the ointment into the skin produces a warming effect on aching muscles. This is the 100g jar, AUST R 61019, and it is for external use only.

How to use Vicks VapoRub safely

Rub a thick layer onto the chest and throat, then cover with a warm dry cloth if you wish, keeping clothing loose so the vapours can reach the nose and mouth. For the steam method, add to hot water that is not boiling, then inhale the vapour - never add it to boiling water, and take care to avoid scalding. Do not apply it in or near the nostrils, do not use it on broken skin, keep it away from the eyes, and do not swallow it. It is not suitable for children under 2 years of age. The camphor it contains is toxic if swallowed, so keep the jar out of reach of children.

How does Vicks VapoRub work?

Two ways at once. The menthol, camphor and eucalyptus oil release vapours that are breathed in and give the sensation of a clearer nose, while rubbing the ointment into the skin produces a warming counter-irritant effect that eases minor muscular aches.

Is Vicks VapoRub safe for children?

Not under 2 years of age. For children aged 2 and over, apply to the chest and throat only. It should never be applied in or under the nose at any age, and the jar should be kept out of reach because the camphor in it is toxic if swallowed.

Can you put Vicks VapoRub under your nose?

No. The manufacturer directs that it is not applied in or near the nostrils. Applying it there risks irritation and, in young children, breathing problems. Rub it on the chest and throat and let the vapours rise instead.

How do you use Vicks VapoRub in steam?

Add it to a bowl of hot water that is not boiling, then lean over the bowl and breathe in the vapour. Use a towel over the head if you like, but keep a safe distance to avoid scalding. Never put it into boiling water.

Does Vicks VapoRub expire?

Yes. Check the expiry date printed on the jar and carton, store it below 30 degrees Celsius, and keep the lid closed. Discard it once it is past date rather than relying on an old jar at the back of the cupboard.
