Is 70% alcohol strong enough?
Yes. Health authorities recommend alcohol-based hand rubs of at least 60% alcohol, and 70% is the concentration generally regarded as most effective — some water in the formulation helps the alcohol act on the cell wall, so higher is not automatically better.
When should I use sanitiser instead of washing my hands?
Sanitiser is for when hands are not visibly soiled and soap and water are not available. If hands are visibly dirty, greasy or contaminated with body fluids, wash with soap and water instead.
How much should I use?
Enough to wet both hands completely — roughly a 3mL dose. Rub over all surfaces including between the fingers, the backs of the hands and the thumbs until dry, which usually takes about 20 seconds.
Can I take this on a plane?
A 60mL bottle is within the standard 100mL limit for liquids in carry-on baggage in Australia, though it still needs to go in your clear resealable bag. Always check the current rules with your airline before travelling.
