The Speakman SE-545 is a free standing eye wash station, pedestal mounted with a stainless steel rectangular bowl. Its panic bar activator sits on top of the unit, making it easy to find and operable with either hand. The soft aerated sprays let a casualty comfortably flush their eyes for the ANSI-recommended 15 minutes, and the unit is compliant to ANSI Z358.1.

Why choose a free standing eye wash station

Fifteen minutes is the number that decides the specification. ANSI Z358.1 requires a full 15-minute flush, and nobody holds their eyes open under a hard jet for that long - they stop early, which is precisely when a chemical injury becomes permanent. The soft aerated spray exists to make the full flush tolerable, which is the difference between a station that is compliant and one that is actually used.

How long does an eye wash need to run for?

ANSI Z358.1 requires a 15-minute flush. That is far longer than most people expect, and it is the reason the spray is aerated - a hard jet is not tolerable for fifteen minutes, so a casualty stops early and the flush fails to do its job.

Why is the activator on top?

Because a casualty with a chemical splash cannot see. An activator on the top face is found by feel with an outstretched hand, and the panic bar works with either the right or left hand, which matters if one hand is also injured.

What does ANSI Z358.1 cover?

It is the recognised standard for emergency eyewash and shower equipment, covering flushing duration, flow, water temperature, unobstructed access and routine testing. This unit is compliant, but compliance also depends on where you install it and how you maintain it.

Free standing or wall mounted - which do I need?

Free standing where there is no suitable wall near the hazard - open plant, laboratory benches, workshop floors. Wall mounted where there is. The governing requirement is unobstructed access within roughly ten seconds travel of the hazard, not convenience of plumbing.

Does it need regular testing?

Yes. ANSI Z358.1 expects plumbed units to be activated routinely - commonly weekly - to confirm flow and to clear stagnant water and sediment from the line. Record the tests; that record is what an auditor asks for.

What about water temperature?

The standard calls for tepid flushing fluid. Water that is too cold makes a casualty stop before fifteen minutes, and water that is too hot can worsen a chemical injury. If your supply runs very cold or very hot, that needs addressing as part of the installation.

Emergency eyewash equipment must be installed, located, tested and maintained in accordance with ANSI Z358.1 and your work health and safety obligations - product compliance alone does not make an installation compliant. Flush for the full recommended duration and seek urgent medical attention for any chemical splash to the eye, continuing to flush on the way if possible.
