How does an instant ice pack get cold without a freezer?
Squeezing the pack bursts an inner pouch, letting two components mix. The reaction absorbs heat from its surroundings, so the pack drops in temperature within seconds. It needs no power, refrigeration or preparation.
How long does it stay cold?
Typically around 15 to 20 minutes, which matches the usual advice of applying cold for up to 20 minutes at a time. It is single use — once the reaction is spent the pack cannot be recharged.
Should it go straight on the skin?
No. Wrap it in a thin cloth or place it over clothing. Direct contact with a very cold pack can damage skin, and a barrier also makes the cold more comfortable to tolerate for the full 20 minutes.
Instant or reusable — which should a kit carry?
