Finger Pulse Oximeter FAQs
What does a pulse oximeter measure?
Two things: SpO2, the percentage of haemoglobin carrying oxygen, and pulse rate. It shines light through the fingertip and reads how much is absorbed, which is why it needs no needle and gives a result in seconds.
What can affect the reading?
Cold fingers, poor circulation, nail polish or artificial nails, movement, and very bright ambient light. Warm the hand, remove polish, keep still, and re-read before acting on an unexpected result.
Does it diagnose anything?
No. It is a measurement tool. A reading is one piece of information alongside how the person looks and breathes, and it does not replace clinical assessment. Act on the patient, not only the number.
Can it be used on children?
It is suitable for paediatric as well as adult use. On a very small finger the sensor may struggle to get a stable trace, in which case a paediatric-specific probe is more reliable.
