The ECOTEST Saliva Pen is a consumer self-test for COVID-19 that takes a saliva sample rather than a nasal swab. That difference is the point of the product: a saliva test is far easier to self-administer correctly, which matters for children, elderly users and anyone who will not tolerate a nasal swab — and a test taken properly is worth more than a better test taken badly. Two-step process, results in 15 minutes. ARTG 372335.

Saliva Rapid Antigen Test FAQs

Is a saliva test as good as a nasal swab?

Both are rapid antigen tests detecting the same viral proteins. The practical advantage of saliva is that people perform it correctly — a nasal swab that is not inserted far enough is a common cause of a false negative, and saliva removes that failure mode.

How should the sample be taken?

Follow the pack insert exactly. In general, avoid eating, drinking, smoking or brushing teeth for a period beforehand, since anything in the mouth can interfere with the result.

What does a negative result mean?

That antigen was not detected at the moment of testing. It is not a guarantee you are not infected, particularly early in an infection when viral load is still low. If symptoms continue, test again or seek a PCR.

What is the ARTG number for?

ARTG 372335 is this test's entry in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods — confirmation it has been assessed and approved for supply in Australia. Never buy a self-test without one.
