When a fire blanket beats an extinguisher

For a contained fire caught early - a pan, a small bench fire, a person whose clothing is alight - it is often the better first response. It makes no mess, needs no aim, and cannot make a fat fire worse the way water does. An extinguisher covers a wider range of fire classes and larger fires, but it discharges powder or foam across the room and needs regular servicing. Most workshops and kitchens carry both. Whatever you reach for, only tackle a fire you are confident is small and contained, and leave if it is not.

How do you use a fire blanket?

Pull the tabs to release it, hold it with your hands shielded behind the top edge, and lay it over the fire rather than throwing it. Turn off the heat source if you can reach it safely, then leave the blanket in place until everything has cooled completely.

What fires is a fire blanket used for?

Small contained fires, most commonly cooking oil and fat fires where water must never be used, and clothing fires. It is not intended for a fire that has spread beyond its starting point - in that case evacuate and call the fire service.

What size do I need?

A 1m x 1m blanket suits a domestic kitchen and a single pan. This larger 1.2m x 1.8m size gives more coverage for workshops, vehicles and commercial kitchens, and more material if it is needed to wrap a person.

Can it be reused?

No. Once a blanket has been used on a fire it should be replaced, even if it looks undamaged, because heat exposure compromises the material. Check the pouch periodically and replace any blanket that is damaged, damp or past its stated life.

Where should it be kept?

Mounted on a wall near the risk but not directly above it, so you are never reaching over a fire to get it. In a kitchen that means beside the exit rather than behind the cooktop.
