Using an instant cold pack safely
Activate it, then wrap it in a cloth or towel before it touches skin - never apply a cold pack directly, because an ice burn over already injured tissue is a real risk and happens faster than people expect. Around 15 to 20 minutes on, then off for at least as long before repeating, is the usual guidance. Stop sooner if the skin becomes numb, white or mottled. Take extra care with children, with anyone who has reduced sensation or circulation, and with anyone who cannot tell you it is hurting. If the pack splits, discard it and rinse any contents off the skin.
Common uses
Sprains, strains, bruising, minor burns and insect bites; sideline and sports first aid; vehicle, site and workplace kits; and school sick bays. If you would rather refreeze than replace, see the reusable Techni Ice sheet, or browse more hot and cold packs at MediBC.
Instant Cold Pack FAQs
How does an instant cold pack work?
Squeezing it breaks an inner pouch and mixes two components in a reaction that draws heat in. The pack goes cold within seconds, with no freezer involved.
How long does it stay cold?
Usually around 15 to 20 minutes, which matches the recommended application time. Once used it cannot be recharged.
Can it be applied straight to the skin?
No. Always wrap it in a cloth or towel first. Direct contact risks an ice burn, especially over injured skin or on children.
What size cold pack should I use?
Match it to the area. This medium 18.5 x 15.5cm size suits a knee, ankle, elbow or shoulder. A small pack is enough for a finger, wrist or a facial knock.
Do instant cold packs expire?
They have a long shelf life unactivated, but check the date on the pack and replace any that have leaked, hardened or been squeezed accidentally in the kit.
