How to use baby oil
- Baby massage: warm a few drops between your hands and use gentle strokes on the legs, arms, back and tummy. Keep oil off baby's hands and face so it does not end up in the eyes or mouth.
- After the bath: smooth a little onto damp skin and pat dry; oil helps hold in the water already on the skin.
- Cradle cap: healthdirect Australia suggests gently massaging a small amount of baby oil, moisturiser or lotion into the scalp at night to soften the scales, removing loose particles in the morning with a soft baby toothbrush or cloth, then washing with baby shampoo. We stock QV Baby 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner.
- Adults: rub into dry elbows, knees and heels after a shower.
Why choose a mineral baby oil?
Mineral oil does not contain the nut or seed oils that young children can be allergic to, and healthdirect advises against using olive oil for cradle cap because it can lead to a yeast infection. A mineral oil base gives you an easy-spreading product for daily skin care and massage.
What it is not
It is designed as a skin oil rather than a bath additive. If you want something to add to the bath water, see QV Baby Bath Oil, which is made for that job. It is also not a treatment for eczema, rashes or broken skin. If your baby has eczema, sensitive skin or a rash that will not settle, ask your GP, child health nurse or pharmacist which products to use.
Oil makes skin and surfaces slippery. Hold baby securely after applying it, wipe up spills on the floor, and keep the bottle closed and out of reach of children. Do not use it near the nose or mouth, and stop using it if the skin becomes red or irritated.

Baby Oil FAQs
What is it made from?
Mineral oil and fragrance. It contains no nut or seed oils.
What is it used for?
Baby massage, moisturising dry skin after a bath, softening cradle cap scales overnight, and dry patches on adult skin.
Is baby oil good for baby massage?
Yes, it is labelled ideal for massage. Warm a few drops in your hands, use gentle strokes, and keep it away from baby's hands, face and eyes.
Does it help cradle cap?
healthdirect suggests gently massaging a little oil, moisturiser or lotion into the scalp at night to soften the scales, then washing with baby shampoo in the morning. Avoid olive oil.
Can adults use it?
Yes. The manufacturer promotes it for adult dry, rough patches too, and it can be applied to damp skin after a shower.
Is it suitable for eczema?
It is not an eczema treatment. If your baby has eczema or very sensitive skin, ask your GP, child health nurse or pharmacist which moisturiser to use, as the oil contains fragrance.
Can I put it in the bath?
It is designed as a leave-on oil and makes the bath slippery. For bath water, use a product made for it, such as a baby bath oil.
