Danger sign or warning sign? Choosing the right format
The two are not interchangeable and the distinction is meaningful. A danger sign marks a hazard that will cause death or serious injury if ignored - live electrical equipment, an unguarded drop, a confined space. A warning sign, black on a yellow triangle, marks a hazard that could cause injury but is a step below that. Using DANGER for a moderate hazard dilutes it, and the cost of dilution is that people stop reading the red ones. AS 1319 sets out the conventions: danger is white on a red oval over black, warning is black on yellow, mandatory instructions are white on a blue disc, prohibitions are a red ring and diagonal slash, emergency information is white on green and fire equipment is white on red. Keep the wording short, specific and about the hazard itself rather than the rule.
Common uses
Construction and industrial sites, plant rooms, switchrooms, confined-space entries, workshops and farms - anywhere the hazard is site-specific. For standard legends see our stocked versions such as Danger Keep Out and Danger Live Wires, or browse more fire and safety equipment at MediBC.
Danger Sign FAQs
What is the difference between a danger sign and a warning sign?
A danger sign marks a hazard that will cause death or serious injury if ignored. A warning sign, black on a yellow triangle, marks a hazard that could cause injury but is less severe. Using the danger format for a moderate hazard weakens it.
How do I supply the custom wording?
Send us the exact text you need for the lower panel when you order, and confirm the wording before production. Keep it short and specific to the hazard - long messages stop being read at distance.
What does the AS 1319 danger format look like?
White DANGER lettering inside a red oval, set on a black header panel, with the message in black on white below. That layout is what makes a danger sign recognisable before the words register.
Does a danger sign make a workplace compliant?
No. A sign informs; it does not control the hazard. Signage sits alongside elimination, isolation, guarding, procedures and training, and specific requirements may apply under electrical, confined space or construction rules.
Can danger signs be used outdoors?
This is a rigid plastic sign suited to indoor and sheltered outdoor use. For prolonged sun and weather exposure, check UV and outdoor suitability with us before ordering.
