The size #4 Disposable Guedel Airway is 100mm and colour-coded red, intended for large adult use. Guedel airways keep the airway clear of obstruction during advanced first response, and size must be matched to the patient — too short and it will not hold the tongue clear, too long and it can reach the larynx. Uses
Maintaining a clear airway in an unresponsive patient by trained responders. Available as a complete adult set of sizes 0-5 or a paediatric set 000-1; see also all Guedel sizes and the nasopharyngeal airway.
Guedel Airway FAQs
How is a Guedel airway sized?
By length, and it is measured on the patient — from the centre of the lips to the angle of the jaw, or corner of the mouth to the earlobe. The colour coding then lets you grab that size quickly. Guessing by age alone is unreliable.
What happens if the size is wrong?
Too short and it fails to hold the tongue away from the back of the throat, so the obstruction remains. Too long and it can press on the larynx, causing gagging, vomiting or laryngospasm. Both make things worse, which is why measuring matters.
Who should use one?
Trained responders only, and only in an unresponsive patient with no gag reflex. In someone who is responsive or gagging it will provoke vomiting and risk aspiration.
Why individually packaged?
It goes into an airway. Individual packaging keeps each one clean until the moment it is opened, and means an unused airway in a kit has not been exposed to everything else in there.
