For 2022, why not base your resolutions on your family’s health and wellbeing? After all, what could be more important than keeping your loved ones happy and healthy?

We give you some inspiration for healthy New Year resolution ideas so that you start 2022 the right way!

1. Get better sleep

Start your healthy New Year resolutions with getting enough sleep, which is vital to your overall health and wellbeing. It’s a chance for both your mind and body to rest and repair. What’s more, a lack of sleep has been linked to an increased risk of gaining weight, heart disease, depression and other conditions.

Most adults need around eight hours of sleep. If you’re not getting enough, it’s time to review your sleep routine. Try these tips for a good night’s sleep:

  • Keep the same routine, going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. This includes weekends.
  • Ban phones, TV and laptops from your bedroom. Using devices can interfere with your body’s ability to fall asleep, so put them away an hour before bedtime.
  • Incorporate relaxation techniques into your nighttime routine. These could include yoga, meditation or breathing techniques.
  • Avoid stimulants like cigarettes and caffeine before bedtime. You should also avoid alcohol. While it may make you feel tired, alcohol also has the ability to disrupt your sleep as your body works to process it.
  • Don’t nap during the day. This can seriously disrupt your sleep cycle. If you feel the urge to take a break, opt for some gentle exercise instead.

2. Eat more wholefoods

By simply following the rule of eating more wholefoods, you will automatically improve your diet.

Wholefoods are foods that haven’t been processed and are consumed in their natural state. They include fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole oats and brown rice.

Including more wholefoods in your diet will reduce your risk of conditions including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It can also help you lose weight.

3. Get into an exercise routine

How many of us have started an exercise regime, only to give it up after a few weeks?

The first part of the secret is to find an activity you actually enjoy. Think out of the box to find a type of exercise that suits you. It could be anything from dancing around your lounge to your favourite music to playing tag with your kids. Or was there an activity you loved as a child such as ballet, climbing or swimming? There’s no reason why you can’t take it up again as an adult!

The second part is to set aside regular time to practise your chosen activity. Put it in the diary or get an exercise buddy — whatever it takes to make it part of your routine.

4. Cut down on the bad stuff

Most of us have a vice, whether that’s too much sugar, alcohol or cigarettes. Use the New Year as the perfect opportunity to cut down on what’s bad for you — or even cut it out completely!

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, try sugar swaps. So instead of reaching for cakes, biscuits and chocolate, try fresh and dried fruit for their natural sweetness.

To cut back on alcohol, try restricting your consumption to weekends or a handful of days spread across the week. When you’re not drinking alcohol, have fun experimenting with mocktails for a refreshing change from your usual drinks.

Quitting smoking for good will bring a host of health benefits as soon as you stop. Your sense of taste and smell will also improve, and your skin will look fresher. Enlist the help of your doctor to find out the best method for you.

5. Learn some basic first aid

Learning some basic first aid is something all family members can do, regardless of age or experience.

Search for a family-friendly course near you or look online for tutorials that you can follow together.

Keep at least one first aid kit at home in case of emergency. A family first aid kit containing everything you need for most emergencies is ideal. You should also invest in a kit to keep in your car so you’re covered even when you’re on the move. And make sure your kits are well stocked up with supplies so you never run short in an emergency.
