SpillSmart General Purpose Spill Kit in a 120L Wheelie Bin
The SpillSmart general purpose spill kit packs a full set of absorbents into a yellow 120L wheelie bin that can be rolled straight to the spill. It suits workshops, warehouses, mines and plants, and handles both water-based non-hazardous liquids such as paints and coolants and hydrocarbons such as oils, fuels and grease. Why choose a wheelie bin spill kit?
Spills rarely happen next to the storeroom. A wheelie bin kit can be wheeled to the spill, and its absorbents are kept together in one place: socks to stop the spill spreading, pads and the pillow to soak it up, and floor sweep for the last film on the floor. SpillSmart does not publish a total absorption capacity, and the 120L figure is the bin size, not the volume it absorbs.
What this spill kit is not for
This is a general purpose kit for non-aggressive liquids. It is not designed for acids, alkalis, corrosives or other aggressive chemicals, which need a chemical-rated kit, and it is not a biohazard kit for blood and body fluids, which needs a kit such as the REGULATOR biohazard kit. Always check the safety data sheet for the product that has spilled.
Safe Work Australia's model Code of Practice on managing risks of hazardous chemicals provides for a spill containment system wherever there is a risk of a hazardous chemical in liquid or solid form spilling or leaking, and warns that it must not bring together incompatible chemicals. Size and type your kit to the largest spill that could reasonably happen.
Responding to a spill
- Make the area safe: stop the source if you can do so safely, and keep people away.
- For fuels and other flammable liquids, remove ignition sources if it is safe to do so and avoid sparks.
- Choose gloves, eye protection and other PPE from the safety data sheet; the supplied nitrile gloves will not suit every liquid.
- Surround the spill with socks, then soak it up with pads and the pillow, working from the outside in.
- Spread floor sweep on what is left, then sweep it up.
- Bag the used absorbents and dispose of them according to your local waste rules for the product spilled.
- Restock the kit straight away.
Do not attempt a clean up if there is fire, heavy vapour, an unknown substance, an injury, or liquid entering drains or waterways; follow your site emergency procedure instead.
For smaller areas or vehicles, the 20L general purpose spill kit in a vinyl bag is easier to carry. Browse more workplace safety equipment.

Can it be used for acid spills?
No. It is for non-aggressive liquids such as oils, fuels and coolants. Acids, alkalis, corrosives and other aggressive chemicals need a chemical-rated kit chosen to suit the chemical, so check the safety data sheet.

Do spill kits expire?
SpillSmart does not publish an expiry date for these absorbents. Check the kit regularly, keep it dry and closed, and restock anything used, damaged or missing straight away.
Is a spill kit required in the workplace?
Where there is a risk of a hazardous chemical spill, Safe Work Australia's model Code of Practice provides for a spill containment system. Check the requirements in your state or territory and your site risk assessment.
