Chest Seal FAQs
Why does a chest seal need vents?
An unvented seal stops air entering the wound but also traps air that is already in the chest cavity, which can build into a tension pneumothorax — a rapidly life-threatening problem. Vent channels let that trapped air out while still blocking air going in.
Why two seals in a pack?
Because a penetrating object that goes in usually comes out. Treating the entry wound and missing the exit leaves the injury untreated. The twin pack exists so the second seal is already in the responder's hand.
What if the vents get blocked by blood?
That is what the three-channel design is for. The seal keeps functioning with two of the three channels obstructed, which is a realistic scenario in a bleeding chest wound.
Who should be applying this?
Trained responders. Recognising a penetrating chest injury, and recognising a tension pneumothorax developing after the seal is on, both require training. This belongs in a kit alongside the training to use it.
