What Nyal Cold Sore Cream does, and what it is not
This is a symptomatic product. Menthol and camphor soothe, and the cream itself acts as a barrier over skin that would otherwise dry and split. What it does not contain is an antiviral. Antiviral cold sore treatments use aciclovir or a similar agent and work against the virus itself, which is a different thing entirely, and they need to be started at the very first tingle to do much. If you are looking to shorten an outbreak rather than make it more comfortable, an antiviral is what you want and a pharmacist can advise. Keep the cream off broken or weeping skin and out of the eyes, do not share the tube during an outbreak, and see a doctor if sores are frequent, severe, spreading, or not settling.
Common uses
Home and travel medicine cabinets, workplace first aid rooms, and handbags during an outbreak. For itching from bites and stings rather than cold sores, see Eurax Cream. Keep it with the rest of your first aid supplies, or browse related medical supplies at MediBC.
Nyal Cold Sore Cream FAQs
What is in Nyal Cold Sore Cream?
Each gram contains menthol 5mg and camphor 15mg in a cream base. Those soothe the pain and itching, and the cream forms a protective barrier over the area.
Does it stop a cold sore developing?
It relieves symptoms and protects the skin rather than acting on the virus. Antiviral creams containing aciclovir are the products that target the virus, and they need to be started at the first tingle. Ask a pharmacist which suits your situation.
Can it be used on cracked lips?
Yes, it is indicated for the symptoms of cold sores and cracked lips. The barrier effect is what helps in both cases, by keeping the area from drying out further.
How often should it be applied?
Follow the directions on the pack. Apply to the affected area and reapply as directed, using a clean finger or a cotton bud each time rather than touching the tube to the sore.
Are cold sores contagious?
Yes, particularly while blistering and weeping. Avoid kissing and sharing cups, cutlery, towels or lip products, wash your hands after applying anything, and do not share the tube.
