What is a Rapid Antigen Test?

Antigens are proteins that are part of the COVID-19 virus. If the test detects antigens in your nasal sample, it means that an active COVID-19 virus is present in your body.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE

  • The COVID-19 antigen self-test may be supplied for self-testing in the home or other environment.
  • Negative test results with COVID-19 antigen self-tests do not exclude infection with COVID-19 (so face masks, social distancing and good hygiene practice must be maintained).

What is the Panbio COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test?

The Panbio COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test by Abbott is an easy-to-use rapid antigen test (RAT) for detecting current COVID-19 infection at home, using a simple shallow nasal swab. It is TGA-approved in Australia for self-testing and gives a result in about 15 minutes.

How to use the Panbio self-test

  1. Swab both nostrils (about 2cm in) as shown in the instructions.
  2. Swirl the swab in the buffer tube to release the sample.
  3. Add the stated number of drops to the test device well.
  4. Read at 15 minutes: two lines = positive, one line at C = negative.

Kit contents: test device, nasal swab, buffer tube, disposal bag and instructions (multi-packs include a tube rack).

Panbio Self-Test FAQs

How long does the Panbio test take?

About 15 minutes from applying the sample to reading the result.

How do I read the result?

Two lines (C and T) mean a positive result; a single line at C means negative. No line at C means the test is invalid.

Is it a nasal or throat swab?

It uses a shallow nasal swab — about 2cm into each nostril — which is simpler and more comfortable than a deep swab.

Is it approved for home use?

Yes — it is TGA-approved in Australia as a COVID-19 antigen self-test. Always follow the instructions for use.

What should I do if I test positive?

Follow current local health advice for a positive rapid antigen test, including isolation and reporting requirements where applicable.

More information: TGA – COVID-19 rapid antigen self-tests. Always read the label and use only as directed.
