Panbio-COVID-19-Antigen-Self-Test-Kit-by-Abbott

The Panbio COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test by Abbott is a rapid antigen test giving a result in 15 minutes at home. It detects active COVID-19 infection with or without symptoms, uses a comfortable nasal swab, and comes with illustrated step-by-step instructions. This is the 4-test pack.

Why choose the Panbio rapid antigen test

Antigens are proteins that form part of the virus, so a rapid antigen test is looking for the virus itself rather than for your body's response to it. That is why it indicates an active infection - the kind of answer that is actually useful before visiting a relative, returning to work, or deciding whether today's symptoms are the thing going around the office.

Panbio is Abbott's consumer version of a test used professionally, and it is trusted in more than 100 countries. That matters because it is not a design created for home use from scratch; it carries the technology and established performance of the professional-use test into a self-test format, with an illustrated procedure written for someone doing it for the first time.

The pack is built to be usable. Four complete tests, each with its own swab, buffer bottle, extraction tube and cap, plus a tube rack and a disposal bag per test - so nothing needs improvising on a kitchen bench. It can be used at all ages, with children under 14 supported by an adult, which makes a four-pack a sensible household quantity rather than a single-use purchase.

Common uses

Households keep them for the obvious moments - symptoms, a known exposure, or before seeing someone elderly or immunocompromised - and workplaces, aged care and childcare services hold stock for the same reasons. Where a different brand or pack size suits, the Clungene COVID-19 rapid antigen self-test 5-pack is the alternative we stock. If you are testing because you will be around vulnerable people, a P2 / N95 mask does more to protect them than a test result alone. Stocked with our everyday pharmacy and medical supplies.

rapid antigen test FAQs

What is a rapid antigen test?

Antigens are proteins that form part of the COVID-19 virus. If the test detects antigens in your nasal sample, it indicates the virus is present - an active infection. It is a direct test for the virus, which is why it gives a same-day answer rather than a historical one.

How long do results take?

15 minutes. Read the result within the time window given in the instructions - reading it too early can miss a faint positive line, and reading it much later can produce a line that does not mean anything.

Can I use it without symptoms?

Yes. It is designed to detect active infection with or without symptoms, which is why it is used before visiting vulnerable people or returning to a workplace. Bear in mind sensitivity is generally lower without symptoms, so a negative is less reassuring in that situation.

Can children use it?

It can be used at all ages, but children under 14 should be supported by an adult. The nasal swab is the comfortable shallow type rather than a deep throat sample, which makes it considerably easier with children.

Does a negative result mean I definitely do not have COVID-19?

No. A negative result is not a guarantee, particularly very early in an infection, without symptoms, or if the swab was not taken properly. If you have symptoms and a negative result, repeat the test after 24 to 48 hours and follow current public health advice.

What should I do if the test is positive?

Follow the current public health advice for your state or territory, which changes over time - so check the current guidance rather than relying on what applied previously. Seek medical advice promptly if you are at higher risk of severe illness, as antiviral treatment is time-critical, and call 000 for breathing difficulty or chest pain.

Always read the instructions for use and follow them exactly - incorrect sampling or timing is the most common cause of an inaccurate result. A negative result does not exclude COVID-19 infection, particularly early in illness or in the absence of symptoms, and results should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and current public health advice. This is a self-test, not a substitute for medical assessment. Seek medical advice if you are unwell or at higher risk of severe illness, and call 000 for difficulty breathing or chest pain.
