Caution sign, warning sign or danger sign?

Choose the sign category from the hazard’s potential consequences, as identified in your risk assessment. A DANGER sign is for a hazard that is likely to cause death or serious injury. Black on yellow is the warning colour convention under AS 1319, for hazards that could cause injury but are a step below that: wet or uneven floors, moving vehicles, overhead work, noise or temporary changes to a work area. Where the hazard is likely to cause death or serious injury, use a custom danger sign as well as, never instead of, the higher-order controls that hazard needs.

Writing the message

Keep it short and specific to the hazard and the action you want: "Forklifts operating, use walkway" works better at a distance than a paragraph of rules. What a sign does not do

A sign informs people about a hazard; it doesn’t control it. Under Australian work health and safety law, signage sits below elimination, substitution, isolation and engineering controls, and works alongside procedures and training. Black and yellow hazard tape can add a visual warning at ground level, but like a sign it supplements, not replaces, fixing or guarding a trip or edge hazard. Remove temporary signs once the hazard is gone so people don’t learn to ignore them.
