Tick Tox is an Australian tick spray that kills ticks instantly by snap freezing. It works on people and pets, it kills leeches too, and one can will kill more than 60 ticks. The 40g (60mL) can is sized to live in a pocket, purse or backpack rather than in a cupboard at home - which is where a tick is never found.

Why choose a freezing tick spray over tweezers

The important principle here is kill the tick where it is rather than grasping and pulling it out. Australian allergy guidance is explicit on this point, and the reason is serious: disturbing or squeezing an attached tick can force more of its saliva into the person. In someone with tick allergy that can provoke a severe allergic reaction, and tick bites are also linked to the development of mammalian meat allergy. A tick killed in place is not squeezed.

Freezing achieves that without contact. This tick spray is delivered well below freezing, so a burst of a second or less directly onto the tick freezes and kills it instantly - no grip, no twist, no pressure on the tick's body. The supplied bookmask shields the surrounding skin so the cold is delivered to the tick and not to the person, and it is worth warning them beforehand that it may sting.

It is built to be carried. At 40g it goes in a pocket or daypack, one can covers more than 60 ticks, and it handles leeches as well - which matters on the same walks in the same country. Practise controlling the length of a squirt with the cap off before you need it on someone's neck, because a short accurate burst is the whole technique.

Common uses

Bushwalking, camping, gardening, dog walking and anywhere along the eastern seaboard where paralysis ticks are active - and it belongs in the pack rather than at home, because ticks are found hours from the car. Keep the tick spray in the pack itself, not the car. Prevention still does most of the work: RID Tropical Strength repellent reduces what attaches in the first place, and Stingose Gel handles the itch from bites and stings afterwards. A sensible addition to any trekking, travel and camping first aid kit.

tick spray FAQs

Why not just pull a tick out with tweezers?

Because grasping and pulling can squeeze more of the tick's saliva into the person. Australian allergy guidance advises killing the tick where it is rather than removing it by grasping - in someone with tick allergy, disturbing an attached tick can trigger a severe reaction.

How do I use the tick spray?

Shield the surrounding skin with the bookmask, hold the nozzle close to the tick and press for one second or less. The tick freezes and dies instantly. Warn the person first, as it may sting. Practise a short burst with the cap off before you need to use it on someone.

How many ticks will one can kill?

More than 60, which is well beyond a single trip or season for most people. The 40g can is sized for carrying rather than for storage, so keep it in the pack, the car or the dog-walking bag rather than at home.

Does it work on leeches?

Yes - it kills leeches as well as ticks. That is genuinely useful in the same wet coastal and rainforest country where paralysis ticks are found, and it means one can covers both.

Can I use it on my dog?

It is designed to kill ticks on people and pets. Take care around the animal's eyes, nose and mouth, use the mask to shield surrounding skin, and see your vet if your pet shows any sign of tick paralysis - weakness, wobbliness, a changed bark or laboured breathing are emergencies.

What if someone is allergic to ticks?

Anyone with known tick allergy should have ticks dealt with in a medical facility where resuscitation is available, rather than at home. If a severe reaction occurs after a tick bite - difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, collapse - use an adrenaline autoinjector if prescribed and call 000 immediately.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Contents under pressure and extremely cold in use - shield surrounding skin, avoid the eyes and mucous membranes, and take care with children. People with known tick allergy should have ticks managed in a medical facility with resuscitation available. Seek urgent medical attention for any sign of a severe allergic reaction after a tick bite, and see a doctor for symptoms of tick paralysis, unexplained rash, fever or ongoing illness following a bite. In an emergency, call 000.
