When Wet Ones work, and when you need a sink

Hand wipes are a convenience product and they are genuinely useful where there is no water - in a vehicle, on a site, at a sports ground, between patients on a home visit. What they do not do is replace washing when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. Soil and grease physically block an antibacterial agent from reaching what it needs to reach, which is why every hand hygiene guideline puts soap and running water first for visibly soiled hands and reserves rubs and wipes for hands that are already clean-looking. Note too that antibacterial is not antiviral: do not assume a wipe handles viruses unless the pack says so. Avoid the eyes, and stop using them if skin becomes irritated.

Common uses

Handbags, vehicles, desks and lunchboxes; travel and camping; sports and event first aid; and home and community care visits. For surfaces and equipment rather than skin, use Clinell Universal Wipes. Keep them with your first aid supplies, or browse related medical supplies at MediBC.

Wet Ones FAQs

Do Wet Ones kill 99.9% of bacteria?

The manufacturer states that they kill 99.9% of bacteria when used as directed. Follow the directions on the pack, and note that the claim covers bacteria rather than viruses.

Are antibacterial wipes as good as washing your hands?

No. Soap and running water are better, and are the right choice whenever hands are visibly dirty or greasy, because soil blocks the antibacterial agent. Wipes are for when there is no sink.

Can Wet Ones be used on the face and body?

This variant is described for hands and body, and is dermatologically tested and pH balanced. Keep them away from the eyes and stop using them if the skin becomes irritated.

Do antibacterial wipes kill viruses?

Not unless the pack specifically says so. Antibacterial refers to bacteria. If you need antiviral performance, check the product claims rather than assuming.

Why do wipes dry out?

Because the seal has been left open. This pack is resealable for that reason - press it closed after each wipe and store it out of direct heat.
