Why keep spare collar and cuff zip ties

Collar and cuff sling material is supplied as a continuous roll and cut to length for the individual - which is exactly why the ties are a separate consumable. Every sling made up uses ties, the roll outlasts them, and a roll of sling material with no fasteners is unusable. Collar and cuff zip ties are the item that quietly runs out first.

A zip tie is the right fastener for the job because it holds a set length and does not creep. A collar and cuff sling works by supporting the wrist in a loop at a specific height, and if the fastening slips a little each day the arm position drifts - which is the thing the sling exists to prevent.

Keeping a pack of 10 in the first aid room or clinic means a sling can be made up and adjusted on the spot. Adjustment is normal - swelling changes, and the position is often revised at review - and each adjustment consumes a tie, since a cut tie cannot be reused.
