The Active Seal Adult Short Leg Cast Bandage Protector is a reusable short leg cast protector measuring 61cm, sized for a below-knee cast or bandage - the ankle and lower leg casts that follow most ankle fractures. Made from TPE, it maintains a waterproof seal for showering, bathing, swimming and spa use.
Why choose a short leg cast protector
A below-knee cast is the classic ankle-fracture cast, and 61cm is sized to seal on the calf or below the knee rather than over the cast itself. That distinction is the whole game: a seal on skin holds, a seal on porous cast material does not, which is why a short leg cast protector that is the right length matters more than one that is simply waterproof.
Foot and ankle casts have a particular problem - the foot is the lowest point, so any water that gets past a poor seal collects in exactly the part of the cast you cannot reach or inspect. How long is it and what does it fit?

Why is a foot cast harder to keep dry?
Because the foot is the lowest point, so any water that gets past the seal runs down and collects around the heel and sole - the part of the cast you can neither see nor dry. That is where softening and skin breakdown start.
Is it safe to shower with a leg cast?
Take care with balance on a wet floor. A shower stool or chair, a handheld hose and a non-slip mat make it much safer than standing on one leg, and the protector fitting quickly means less time balancing.
Can I swim with it?
It is intended for swimming, water sports, whirlpools and hot tubs as well as showering and bathing. Confirm with your treating doctor or fracture clinic first - some injuries and casts should not be submerged at all.
How long will it last?
Three to four weeks of daily use with normal care. Pool chemicals and heat shorten its life, so rinse it in fresh water after swimming and dry it away from direct heat. Check for splits before each use.
What if water gets in?
Remove it, dry the leg and cast edges as best you can, and contact your doctor or fracture clinic if the cast feels soft, loose or heavy, smells, or the skin underneath becomes itchy or sore. Never use a hairdryer or heater on a cast.
Follow the advice of your treating doctor or fracture clinic about getting a cast wet - some injuries and cast types should not be submerged regardless of the cover used. Not for use on broken skin. Take particular care with balance and slipping when showering with a leg cast. Inspect the protector before each use and discard it if split or perished.
