What barrier cream does, and what it does not

Applied before work, it leaves a thin film that keeps dirt, detergents and light soiling off the skin itself, which is why hands wash clean more easily afterwards and why repeated wet work is less punishing. That is the real benefit and it is worth having. What it is not is protective equipment. The film wears away with washing, sweating, friction and time, and it will not stop solvents, corrosives, fuels, strong acids or alkalis, or anything hazardous. It is not a substitute for gloves where gloves are required, and it does not replace handwashing. Apply it before starting, reapply after washing, and choose gloves based on the actual substance and its safety data sheet.

Common uses

Before gardening, automotive and maintenance work, painting, cleaning and other wet or dirty tasks, and as part of an occupational skin care routine where frequent handwashing is causing dryness. Follow it with QV Hand Cream after work, or browse the wider medical supplies range at MediBC.

Barrier Cream FAQs

What is barrier cream?

A skin protection cream applied before work that leaves a temporary film on the skin. It reduces direct contact with dirt, detergents and mild irritants, and helps limit the dryness that repeated washing causes.

How does silicone barrier cream work?

The silicone leaves a light water-resistant layer on the skin surface, so contaminants sit on the film rather than on the skin. The emollient base works underneath it, helping the skin retain its own moisture.

Is it a substitute for gloves?

No. It is not personal protective equipment. Where gloves are required for a chemical, biological or sharps risk, wear gloves selected from the substance's safety data sheet. Barrier cream sits alongside that, not instead of it.

Can it protect hands from chemicals?

Only from mild irritants such as dirt, detergents and general wet work. Do not rely on it for solvents, fuels, corrosives or any hazardous substance, and do not treat it as a chemical barrier.

How often should it be applied?

Before starting work, and again after washing your hands or whenever the film is likely to have worn off. The frequency depends on how wet and dirty the work is and how often you wash.
