How to use a saline eye wash

Tilt the head so the affected eye is lower than the other, hold the lids open, and irrigate from the inner corner outward so nothing washes across into the unaffected eye. Keep flushing for as long as it takes to clear the debris, using more than one ampoule if needed. Discard each ampoule after a single use even if solution remains. Some things must not be treated with a quick rinse and sent back to work: chemical splashes need prolonged irrigation and urgent medical assessment, and an embedded or penetrating object must not be flushed or removed - cover the eye and get medical help immediately.

Common uses

Workplace and site first aid kits, eyewash stations, workshops and laboratories, vehicle and remote kits, and minor wound irrigation in first aid rooms. For allergy-related redness and itch rather than a foreign body, see Visine Allergy eye drops. A padded eye patch is worth keeping beside them for covering the eye afterwards. Saline Eye Wash FAQs

What is saline eye wash used for?

Flushing dust, grit, sand and loose debris from the eye, and irrigating minor wounds. Sterile saline is close to the body's own salt concentration, so it does not sting the way water can.

Why single-use ampoules?

Because sterility is the point. Once a container is opened and handled it can no longer be guaranteed sterile, and an eye is especially vulnerable to contamination. Discard each ampoule after one use.

Can it be used on wounds as well as eyes?

Yes, it is an eye and wound wash. Sterile saline is the standard irrigation fluid for cleaning a minor wound before dressing it.

What if a chemical has splashed in the eye?

Irrigate immediately and keep going for a prolonged period, then seek urgent medical assessment. A 15ml ampoule is not sufficient for a chemical splash - use an eyewash station or running water and do not stop early.

What if something is embedded in the eye?

Do not flush it and do not attempt to remove it. Cover the eye without pressing on it and get medical help straight away.
