What disposable face masks do and do not do

A loose-fitting mask like this mainly reduces the droplets the wearer puts into the air, and gives some barrier against droplets coming the other way. That is a genuinely useful job, and it is not the same job a fitted P2 or N95 respirator does. A respirator is fit-tested and seals to the face to filter fine airborne particles; an earloop mask does not seal and should not be substituted where a respirator is required. If your workplace specifies a barrier level or a standard for a particular task, check the supplier documentation for the mask you are buying rather than assuming a level from the ply count - three layers describes construction, not certified performance.
