The Active Seal Adult Long Arm Cast Bandage Protector is a reusable long arm cast protector measuring 84cm - long enough to seal above an above-elbow cast. Made from TPE, it maintains a waterproof seal for showering, bathing, swimming, water sports, whirlpools and hot tubs.
Why choose a long arm cast protector
An above-elbow cast is the one that makes washing genuinely difficult. A short cover seals below the elbow and leaves the upper arm exposed, so water runs straight down inside. At 84cm this long arm cast protector reaches high enough on the upper arm to seal on skin above the cast, which is the only place a seal actually holds.
Keeping the cast dry is a clinical requirement rather than a preference. A wet plaster cast softens and stops supporting the bone, and a wet fibreglass cast traps damp padding against skin you cannot dry or inspect - which is how itching turns into skin breakdown under a cast that has weeks left to run.
The seal is formed by the TPE stretching over the limb, with no pumps, hook and loop closures or adhesive tapes. With a long arm cast that matters practically: you are working one-handed, so a cover that needs pumping or taping is a cover that gets skipped. How long is it, and where does it seal?
84cm, which is sized to reach up the upper arm and seal on skin above an above-elbow cast. A cover that seals below the elbow will let water run down inside the cast, so length is the thing to check before ordering.
Why must a cast stay dry?
A plaster cast softens when wet and loses the support the fracture depends on. A fibreglass cast holds water in its padding against the skin, causing itching, softening and skin breakdown somewhere you cannot see or dry. Both usually mean a return trip to the fracture clinic.
Can I swim with it?
It is intended for swimming, water sports, whirlpools, hot tubs, showering and bathing. Check with your treating doctor or fracture clinic first - some injuries and some casts should not be submerged whatever cover is used.
How does it seal without tape or a pump?
The TPE stretches over the arm and forms the seal itself. With a long arm cast you are working one-handed, so having nothing to pump, fasten or tape is the difference between using it twice a day and giving up on it.
How long will it last?
Three to four weeks of daily use with normal care. Chemicals and heat shorten that, so rinse it in fresh water after pool or spa use and dry it away from direct heat. Check it for splits before every use.
What if water gets inside?
Remove it, dry the limb and the cast edges as best you can, and contact your doctor or fracture clinic if the cast feels soft, loose or heavy, if it smells, or if the skin underneath becomes itchy or sore. Never dry a cast with a hairdryer or heater.
Follow the advice of your treating doctor or fracture clinic about getting a cast wet - some injuries and cast types should not be submerged regardless of the cover used. Not for use on broken skin. Inspect the protector before each use and discard it if split or perished.
