The AEROCOOL Reusable Gel Hot and Cold Pack does both jobs from one pack — heated for aching muscles, nagging back pain and menstrual cramps, or chilled for swelling and acute injury. It is supplied with a towel cover, and that cover is not optional: gel packs at either temperature extreme will damage skin in direct contact. 29 x 12cm, 320g, reusable.

Hot and Cold Pack FAQs

Heat or cold — which for which injury?

Cold for a new injury with swelling: it constricts blood flow and numbs the area. Heat for ongoing muscle ache and stiffness: it increases blood flow and relaxes tissue. Applying heat to a fresh swollen injury makes the swelling worse.

How do I heat it?

Either boil 4 to 5 litres of water, remove it from the heat and immerse the pack for around 10 minutes, or microwave it — and because microwave power varies, start short and work up rather than guessing. Always insert it into the towel cover before use.

Must I use the cover?

Yes. A pack straight from the freezer or from boiling water will burn skin on direct contact, and an ice burn looks and heals much like a heat burn. The cover is what makes either therapy safe.

How long should it be applied?

Around 15 to 20 minutes at a time, then off for at least as long before reapplying. Longer is not better — prolonged contact damages skin and, with cold, restricts the circulation the tissue needs to heal.
