Three ingredients doing three different jobs is what makes the difference. Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic and provides the pain relief people actually feel. Phenazone reduces the painful inflammation driving it. The glycerol base absorbs moisture from exposed and inflamed areas, which is what eases the sensation of pressure behind the eardrum.

It can be dosed frequently, which matters when a child is awake at 2am with earache. For middle ear pain and swimmer's ear, tilt the head with the affected ear uppermost, fill the ear canal, then plug the ear with cotton wool that has itself been moistened with the drops - and repeat every one to two hours until the pain and congestion settle. Do not let the dropper touch the ear.

It has a second, less well-known use: softening wax. Filling the canal and plugging it with moistened cotton wool three times daily for two to three days helps detach wax from the ear wall. If wax is your only problem, a dedicated softener is the more direct choice, but it is useful to know the same bottle covers both.
