What eucalyptus oil is used for

Around the home it lifts adhesive residue, chewing gum, tar and grease marks from hard surfaces and fabric, freshens carpet and laundry, and deters dust mites when added to a wash. As an inhalant, a few drops in a bowl of hot water produces vapour that many people find helps a blocked nose during a cold. It is also used, well diluted in a carrier oil, for massage. Because the oil is undiluted at full strength, dilute it before it touches skin.

Safety - read before use

Undiluted, it is a poison if swallowed. Australian data makes the point plainly: this oil accounts for roughly 46% of essential oil poisoning calls to the NSW Poisons Information Centre, and 63% of those exposures involve someone under 15. A dose of 5mL or more can cause serious central nervous system depression in a child. Most childhood exposures happen via a vaporiser left at floor level, so keep the bottle and any vaporiser well out of reach. Do not swallow it, do not apply it neat to skin, and if it is swallowed seek medical advice immediately rather than waiting for symptoms. It is also toxic to dogs and cats.
