Why heel skin cracks, and what a heel balm has to do

Heels are a special case. Skin there is thick to begin with, it carries the body's weight, and it loses natural urea through constant contact with the ground and with footwear. Urea is what holds water in the outer layer, so as it depletes the skin dries, hardens and thickens - and hardened skin does not stretch. Put weight through a hardened heel and it splits, usually at the rim where the pressure is highest. That is why an ordinary body moisturiser often disappoints on heels: it adds surface softness without addressing the water-holding capacity underneath. Apply it to clean dry feet, work it into the heel rim and any thickened areas, and use it consistently rather than occasionally - cracked heels take weeks, not days.
