The AERODIAGNOSTIC Peak Flow Meter in the adult range measures how fast air can be pushed out of the lungs, which is the standard way of monitoring asthma and other respiratory conditions between clinical visits. The point of measuring at home is trend, not a single number — a falling peak flow often shows a deterioration days before it is felt. Part of the AERODIAGNOSTIC range.

Peak Flow Meter FAQs

What does a peak flow meter actually measure?

The fastest speed you can blow air out of your lungs, in litres per minute. Narrowed airways slow that flow, so the number drops before symptoms are obvious — which is what makes it useful for spotting a deterioration early.

Adult or child version?

They differ in scale range. A child blowing into an adult meter registers at the very bottom of the scale, where small changes are hard to read. Match the meter to the person for readings you can actually track.

How should it be used?

Stand or sit upright, take a full breath in, seal your lips around the mouthpiece and blow as hard and fast as you can. Take the best of three attempts, and record it at the same time each day so the trend is comparable.

What is a normal reading?

It varies by age, height and sex, so the meaningful comparison is against your own personal best rather than a chart. A reading falling below the level your clinician has set for you is the signal to act on your asthma plan.
