How does QuikClot Combat Gauze work?
The gauze is impregnated with kaolin, a chemically inactive mineral that accelerates the body's own clotting cascade where it contacts blood. It does not introduce animal or human proteins or botanicals - it speeds up the clot the patient is already trying to form.
How is it applied?
It is packed firmly into the wound, in contact with the bleeding source, and held with direct pressure for the time specified in your protocol before dressing over it. Laying it on the surface of a deep wound does not work - the contact with the bleeding vessel is what matters.
Gauze or tourniquet - which do I use?
They solve different problems. A tourniquet controls life-threatening limb bleeding above the wound. Haemostatic gauze is for wounds a tourniquet cannot address - junctional sites such as groin, armpit and neck, and deep or cavity wounds that need packing. Serious trauma kits carry both.
What is it indicated for?
Temporary external control of traumatic bleeding - gunshot wounds, stabbings, large wounds and mass casualty events. "Temporary" is the operative word: it buys time to definitive surgical care, it is not a treatment.
Does it burn the wound?
This is a kaolin-based gauze, and kaolin is described as chemically inactive. It is not the same technology as the earliest generation of granular haemostatic products. Follow the instructions for use, and note that it is designed to be easy to remove at hospital.
Who should use it?
Personnel trained in bleeding control and wound packing, working within their scope of practice. Packing a wound correctly is a taught skill - having the gauze without the training does not deliver the result. Always call 000 and get the patient to definitive care.
For use by appropriately trained personnel in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions for use and local clinical protocols. Indicated for temporary external control of traumatic bleeding only - it is not definitive treatment and does not replace urgent surgical care. Sterile: do not use if the pouch is damaged or opened, and use one strip for one patient. For catastrophic bleeding, call 000 immediately and apply direct pressure while help is arranged.
