Why choose a pedal bin for a clinic or first aid room?
Every time someone lifts a bin lid by hand after dressing a wound or removing gloves, the lid becomes something the next person touches. A foot pedal removes that step: you open the bin with your foot, drop the waste in and walk away. The lid also keeps used dressings, gloves and tissues out of sight in a room where people are being treated or waiting. The stainless steel body can be wiped clean as part of routine cleaning, for example with a surface disinfectant spray used as its label directs.
What this pedal bin is for, and what it is not for
This is a general waste bin. It is not a sharps container and it is not a clinical or biohazard waste bin.
- Sharps: needles, lancets and blades must go into a purpose-made, puncture-resistant sharps container. NSW Health advises never putting sharps in household waste, recycling or public litter bins; seal the sharps container when it is three quarters full and take it to a participating pharmacy, hospital or council community sharps bin.
- Clinical waste: blood-soaked dressings and other contaminated waste must follow your state rules, your workplace procedure and your waste contractor's requirements.
- General waste: wrappers, clean paper towel, uncontaminated gloves and everyday rubbish belong here.
Our sharps and clinical waste disposal guide explains the difference in more detail.
Placement and care
- Stand it on a flat floor where the pedal can be reached easily, near the hand basin or treatment area.
- Use a bin liner and change it before it overfills, rather than pressing waste down by hand.
- Wipe the lid, pedal and body regularly, and clean any spills straight away.

Pedal Bin FAQs
What size is this pedal bin?
It holds 12 litres and measures 24.5cm wide, 33cm deep and 41cm high.
Why use a foot pedal bin?
The foot pedal opens the lid without your hands touching it, so you do not need to touch the lid to open it in clinics, first aid rooms and food areas. The lid also keeps waste out of sight.
Can I put sharps in it?
No. Sharps must go into a puncture-resistant sharps container. NSW Health advises never putting sharps in household waste, recycling or public bins.
Is it suitable for clinical waste?
It is a general waste bin. Contaminated clinical waste must follow your state rules and your waste contractor's requirements.
What is it made of?
Stainless steel, which can be wiped down as part of routine cleaning.
Where is the best place to put it?
Close to where waste is created, such as beside the treatment couch or near the hand basin, on a flat floor where the foot pedal is easy to reach and the lid can open fully without hitting a wall or bench.
What if the pedal or lid stops working?
Check that nothing is caught in the hinge or under the pedal and that the bin is standing on a flat floor. If the mechanism is damaged, contact us about warranty and replacement options rather than forcing it.
Does it come with a bin liner?
Liners are not listed as included. Measure the bin before ordering liners, as Aero does not publish a liner size.
