The AEROSWAB Gauze Swab is a highly absorbent cotton gauze swab that, once soaked in saline or wound wash, becomes the tool for cleaning and preparing a wound before dressing. At 10 x 10cm this is the general-purpose size — big enough to clean around a wound in a few strokes without folding. Supplied non-sterile in a pack of 100, 8-ply, from the Aero wound dressings range.

AEROSWAB Gauze Swab FAQs

What does non-sterile mean for a gauze swab?

It means the swab has not been sterilised, so it should not be used as the layer that sits on an open wound. Its job is cleaning and preparation — wetting with saline and wiping around the wound before a sterile dressing is applied.

Why 8-ply?

Ply is the number of gauze layers. 8-ply holds a useful amount of fluid and keeps its shape while you wipe, where a thinner swab would flatten out and tear.

Which size should I stock?

10 x 10cm is the general-purpose size and the one to buy if you buy one. 5 x 5cm suits small wounds and awkward spots like between fingers. Larger first aid rooms usually carry both.

Can these be used dry?

They can, for padding or absorbing, but their strength is as a wetted cleaning swab. Wiping a wound with dry gauze is more uncomfortable and more likely to disturb the wound surface.
