Are cotton buds bad for your ears?

Inside the ear canal, yes - and it is worth being blunt about it. Pushing a bud into the canal tends to compact wax further in rather than remove it, and it risks scratching the canal, introducing infection or perforating the eardrum. The ear canal is self-cleaning; wax migrates outward on its own. Wipe the outer ear with a damp cloth if you want it clean, and leave the canal alone. If wax is genuinely causing blocked hearing, discomfort or ringing, that needs a pharmacist, GP or audiologist rather than a bud - particularly if you have grommets, a perforated eardrum, past ear surgery, pain or discharge. They have plenty of legitimate uses; cleaning inside ears is not one of them.

Common uses

Applying creams, antiseptics and topical products to a precise spot; cleaning around equipment, controls and small surfaces; lifting adhesive or makeup residue; and detail work in first aid rooms, clinics and laboratories.
