What a face shield protects against

In Australian healthcare, face shields are classed as medical devices whose intended purpose is to protect the wearer from blood and other body fluid splashes during a procedure. Typical examples are wound irrigation, dressing changes, cleaning up body fluids and first aid where splashing is likely, but follow your workplace PPE requirements for each task. Because it covers more of the face than safety glasses, it also helps keep splashes off a mask underneath and off the skin.

What this face shield is not

It is open at the sides and bottom, so it does not filter the air you breathe and is not respiratory protection. It never replaces the mask or respirator your risk assessment requires: use a disposable face mask for droplet and splash risk, and a fitted P2 or N95 respirator where airborne protection is needed. It is also not impact-rated safety eyewear: no impact standard is listed for this visor, so for grinding, cutting or chainsaw work use a visor certified to AS/NZS 1337. And it is not a CPR barrier; for rescue breaths you need a CPR face shield with a one-way valve. For a lower-cost visor for occasional use, compare our disposable plastic shield.

How to put it on and take it off

Follow the instructions for use supplied with the shield. Clean your hands, then position the foam band on your forehead so the visor covers your face without blocking your view. Put it on after your mask and before your gloves. To remove it, take your gloves off first, clean your hands, and lift the shield away by the headband from behind, without touching the front of the visor, which is the part that may be contaminated. As it is single use, dispose of it after the procedure according to your local infection control and clinical waste procedures, particularly after exposure to blood or body fluids, and clean your hands again.

Face Shield FAQs

Are face shields reusable?

Not this one. It is a single-use, non-sterile shield, so dispose of it after each procedure rather than cleaning and reusing it.

How do you use a face shield?

Put it on after your mask and before your gloves, with the band on your forehead and the visor covering your face. Remove it by the headband from behind, after taking off your gloves and cleaning your hands.

Do face shields expire?

No expiry date is listed for this product. Store it clean and dry, and discard it if the visor is scratched, cloudy or damaged, as that reduces both visibility and protection.

Can I wear it with glasses?

Yes. The supplier says it can be worn with or without glasses. Check the fit with your own frames before a procedure.

Does it replace a mask?

No. It protects against splashes and spray, but it is open at the sides and bottom and does not filter the air. Wear the mask or respirator your task requires underneath it.

Is it a CPR barrier?

No. A CPR shield is a small barrier with a one-way valve placed over the mouth for rescue breaths. This is a full-face splash visor worn by the person giving care.
