The Lion AlcoBlow PF is a non-invasive, low-cost way to run rapid pass/fail breath alcohol screening, designed for "zero-alcohol" workplaces. It uses a Lion fuel cell sensor, has just two control buttons, and - unlike conventional breath alcohol instruments - uses no mouthpieces at all.

Why choose the Lion AlcoBlow PF

Having no mouthpieces changes the economics and the practicality of screening. The instrument makes no physical contact with the subject, so there are no disposables to buy, stock, hand out or dispose of, and the cost per test is very low. For a site testing a whole shift at the gate, consumables are normally the entire running cost - removing them is what makes routine screening of everyone affordable rather than occasional.

The fuel cell sensor is the reason to choose an instrument like this over a cheap semiconductor unit. Fuel cell sensors have high specificity to alcohol, meaning they respond to ethanol rather than to the other substances on a person's breath, and they have a long, stable working life. A screener that produces false positives destroys trust in the programme faster than no screening at all.

It is deliberately simple. Two control buttons and a single LED showing the result mean training requirements are minimal and the person operating it does not need to be a technician. Dual-mode operation covers different testing situations - in active mode the subject blows into the cone and a breath sample is taken - so one instrument handles the range of circumstances a workplace encounters.

Common uses

Mining, construction, transport and logistics, manufacturing, rail and marine operations - anywhere a zero-alcohol policy applies and a whole crew needs screening at shift start without a queue. Alcohol screening usually sits inside a broader site safety programme, alongside compliant first aid provision such as the SURVIVAL Workplace First Aid Kit and clear signage like a medium poly first aid sign. Lion AlcoBlow FAQs

What does pass/fail screening mean?

The instrument indicates whether the subject is above or below a set threshold, rather than reporting a precise blood alcohol figure. That is what makes it fast and simple to operate - the decision it supports is whether someone proceeds to a confirmatory test, not what their exact reading is.

Is a screening result evidential?

No. A screening device indicates a result; a confirmed reading requires an evidential breath analyser or a laboratory test, operated under your policy and the relevant legislation. Never treat a screening result as the final basis for a disciplinary or legal outcome - confirm it.

Why are there no mouthpieces?

The AlcoBlow makes no physical contact with the subject, so no disposable mouthpiece is needed. That removes the consumable cost entirely, makes the cost per test very low, and speeds up screening a large group - there is nothing to fit or discard between people.

What is a fuel cell sensor and why does it matter?

A fuel cell sensor reacts electrochemically with ethanol, giving high specificity to alcohol and a long, stable working life. Cheaper semiconductor sensors respond to a wider range of substances and drift more, which produces false positives and undermines confidence in the programme.

How much training is needed?

Minimal for operation - there are two buttons and a single LED result. Your testing policy is the part that needs real attention: who is tested, when, what happens on a positive screen, how confirmation is performed, and how results are recorded and kept private.

How often should it be calibrated?

Follow the manufacturer's recommended calibration and servicing schedule, and keep the records. An uncalibrated screener is not defensible if a result is ever challenged, and calibration status is one of the first things asked about in a dispute.

This is a screening instrument. Results indicate whether alcohol is present above a set threshold and are not evidential - a positive screen should be confirmed using an evidential instrument or laboratory testing in accordance with your workplace policy and applicable legislation. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, calibration schedule and servicing requirements, and retain calibration records. Employers are responsible for ensuring their testing programme complies with privacy, employment and work health and safety obligations.
